Yahoo Answers

Yahoo Answers let anyone post a question and let anyone else answer it, no credentials required — a structure that made it, for a few years, one of the biggest reference sites on the internet and, for just as long, a running joke about what happens when nobody moderates the internet’s homework help desk. It launched in beta on December 8, 2005, growing out of Yahoo’s earlier “Ask Yahoo!” column, and reached general availability in May 2006. By 2009 it claimed around 200 million users and 15 million visitors a day worldwide, briefly trailing only Wikipedia as a destination for looking things up. By 2012, users had logged more than 300 million questions since launch and, at an earlier peak, over a billion questions and answers combined.

The site’s advantage — anyone can answer anything — was also what killed it. As Google’s own search results started surfacing direct answers, snippets, and knowledge panels, and as Reddit and Quora offered better-moderated versions of the same idea, Yahoo Answers’ traffic and quality both declined for years before Yahoo made it official. On April 5, 2021, Yahoo announced the shutdown; the site stopped accepting new questions and answers on April 20, 2021; and by May 4, 2021, it had ceased operating entirely, its URL redirecting to Yahoo’s homepage. Yahoo did not commit to archiving the content itself, though it let users download their own posted questions and answers through June 30, 2021, after which the stored data was deleted. The volunteer Archive Team crawled a partial snapshot — reportedly around 4.75 terabytes — during the read-only window, now viewable in fragments through the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, but it is a salvage operation, not a complete mirror. Yahoo! Chiebukuro, Yahoo Japan’s own long-running Q&A service, kept running under a separate company and was never part of the shutdown — it is not a continuation of Yahoo Answers, just a neighbor that happened to survive.

Yahoo had once been the map of the internet; Yahoo Answers had once been where the internet went to ask each other things instead of a machine. Both jobs went to something else.
